Let's Talk Science

Science matters for all of us who love to talk! And talking is one of our favourite ways to share we are doing as students each day! Understanding how sound is produced as air is forced up over the folds in the larynx, or voice box, and is further shaped by our teeth, tongue and mouth becomes more interesting as we consider singing, presenting and performing in school. We know there are other ways to keep in touch with friends, share ideas and information but asking and answering questions with our voices is one reason why science matters to us!

Zachary Wood, Age 11

Science matters because without science, we wouldn't understand the process of crystal formation. I like to examine crystals. The different colours and shapes are amazing! Science rocks!

Anthony Wood, Age 10

This is the oil pump I built using my erector set. Science helps the oil industry know how to get oil out of the ground to use as energy. I like building things. Science is fun!

Jared Mercer, Age 12

In the picture, I am using the winch to trim the sails on our sailboat. When you are sailing you have to pay attention to wind speed and wind direction, and make sure the sail is trimmed to the right angle that will maximize the force of the wind to sail the boat. Force, angle, direction and speed or velocity are all important concepts learned in physics. So, understanding physics is very important in sailing.

Isn't nature magnificent! The beauty that surrounds us can be preserved for years to come with a little help from everyone. Both humans and wildlife rely on natural growth and vegetation in our forests. It provides food and shelter for humans and animals such as moose, rabbits and squirrels. It also helps provide the earth with clean air by giving off oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide, which is harmful in high doses. That is why science matters to me.

Carla Stephenson, Age 12

Planting a Seedling- In the Spring I plant tomato, cucumber, pumpkin, onion, carrot, and sunflower seeds. Everyday I check them to see if they need watering. In the evening, when it gets cool, I cover them up with a blanket to protect them from the frost and the cool temperatures at night. In the morning, I uncover my plants so they receive the correct amount of light needed to germinate. This process is called photosynthesis. Science matters to me and my plants!

Jaden Coffey, Age 5

Science matters to everyone. It especially matters to me. When I was 9 days old, I was diagnosed with a condition known as congenital hypothyroidism. A condition which is the result of a lack of thyroid hormone and results in profound mental disability. Thanks to modern science, sophisticated newborn screening for this condition is routine in Newfoundland and Labrador. Luckily for me, with early detection and early thyroid hormone replacement, I have the opportunity for normal growth and development. I get to grow, play, and learn as a typical young boy. And who knows, I may be the next Einstein!

In this photo I am picking the peas that I grew in my family vegetable garden. Science matters to me because it taught me all about how plants grow from seeds, how to look after the plants and then provides my family with healthy foods to eat.

Jenna Penney, Age 11

Science matters to me because gravity is what keeps use on the earth and it keeps our atmosphere filled with oxygen that keeps use alive. Gravity is created by the rotation of the earth so we stick on the earth. Without gravity we will all float up into space with no oxygen. I hope we never loose gravity.

This picture shows me looking at the slime trail of a snail that was in my yard. Science matters because it answers questions that we don't know the answers to like "Why do snails have all that slime?"

Seeing the tiny details of organisms, when you would normally never notice them.

Emily Banfield, Age 14

This is a picture of me and my mom. She has survived Cancer three times. Through genetic testing they tested her DNA and found out that she tested positive for a harmful mutation called Lynch Syndrome. Her Brother and Sister were also tested. Out of four siblings, three tested positive and have gone on to develop Cancer themselves. I have a 50% chance of having this gene as well. Although Cancer scares me, I feel confident that Cancer Research has become a number one priority in everyone's life because it saved my Mom's life.

In this photo I am holding the DNA of a strawberry. Science matters because there is always new and interesting things to learn about; like DNA and how to extract it from food!

Kayla Warren, Age 13

When I swim I never think about science but without buoyancy I would sink. Swimming is harder than walking because water is more dense than air and it creates a force called drag that keeps me from moving. Thrust helps me beat drag. Here I am swimming breaststroke and most thrust comes from my feet. I use whip kick, bending my knees and pushing my legs in a circle. I need to be streamlined, (straight and narrow) to pass through water easily. The circular motion goes against streamlining because I become less narrow making breaststroke a hard and slow stroke.

Hayley Doyle, Age 13

We are testing the water quality of a river, and seeing what types of bugs and creatures are in and around the area. By testing the water we can see how we are affeting it and the organisms in it, so we can make sure we don't pollute anymore!

Kristen Bumstead, Age 14

In this picture , I am sitting with my grandfather. This was taken 11 years ago, but because of science, I have recovered it. My grandfather has passed on, but I am so grateful to have these memories to share. Because of the invention of cameras, my grandad is always with me. This invention effects me as well as most teenagers today. Thanks to this science, I not only have my memories from being little, I'll be able to share these memories with my own kids.

Sonali Verma, Age 17

As humans, we should cherish our connections; our relationships with family. This correlates with biological science. I owe the science of genetics for providing me with a family to love, especially when it comes to sisters! With similar personalities and physical features it all involves the intricate details with genes of a family, and how each member relates to another with slight variation. In fact, our DNA is 99 percent alike! With that, it allows me to communicate with my sisters and others with ease, share our natural environment, and feel safe while "bonding" with each other. Hey, maybe there is a little bit of chemistry involved too!

This is a photo of me and my best friend Phoebe. In this photo particularly she is showing her curiosity of me being on my computer. Science matters to me because in order to have such heartfelt connections with animals such as cats, many psychological processes have to be present. These neurological pathways allow us to interact with all sorts of other creatures and relate to them despite our differences.

Science matters to me because I'm truly an outdoors person... If it wasn't for science half the beauty we see everyday wouldn't ever be experienced. Hike's really open my eyes up to the beauty of nature, and what science has created.

Joshua, Age 14

Why should we leave their power at home when we can simply take it with us? The power input of this system is so high that i can charge a phone with it! It is a great way to charge my electrical devices because it does not affect the power bill and it is green to our environment.

Le but de ce concours est de présenter aux étudiants de la 1^ère à la 12^ème année aux défis mathématiques d’une façon amusante afin de les encourager davantage à poursuivre leur intérêt et avancement dans le domaine.

Ce concours a lieu annuellement dans les villes canadiennes suivantes : Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Langley, London, Montréal, Mississauga, North Bay, Ottawa, Scarborough, St-John’s, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Toronto et Winnipeg.

Les étudiants choisissent de participer soit en anglais ou en français.
