In Victoria BC, learning about what goes on in the depths of our oceans is of great interest. Recently, Let’s Talk Science Outreach volunteers at the University of Victoria were asked to work with the Maritime Museum of BC to further develop this interest.
Heather Stewart, the university’s Let’s Talk Science Outreach site coordinator explains that the Museum wanted, “to bring a hands-on component to their upcoming exhibit to make it more kid/family friendly and asked us to make some activities for them.”
Working with members of Ocean’s Network Canada, eight Let’s Talk Science volunteers created hands-on activities to complement the coming What Lies Beneath exhibit. The activities include an interactive food web, a look at deep sea life adaptations, and a collection of whale sounds.
“I thought this was a good opportunity since we had 4 new volunteers this year in the marine science field and I study marine animals as well. It was an ambitious project but it turned out well,” says Stewart.
What Lies Beneath opens to the public January 12th at the Maritime Museum of BC. During the opening week, Let’s Talk Science volunteers will be at the museum to engage families in the newly created activities.
