Learning and Leading Together – Let’s Talk Science National Outreach Conference
The annual Let’s Talk Science Outreach conference will be held in London, Ontario from May 31 to June 4, 2017. Over the four days, Let’s Talk Science Outreach Coordinators from all across Canada will gather to connect, learn, strengthen their leadership skills and celebrate their successes from the past year.
Let’s Talk Science Outreach sites can be found at over 40 post-secondary institutions across Canada and rely on a network of more than 3,500 post-secondary student, professional and industry partner volunteers who engage youth in hands-on/minds-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experiences in both school and community settings.
Let’s Talk Science Outreach Coordinators are in leadership positions at their sites; their responsibilities include managing outreach requests and coordinating and training volunteers. We provide them with professional training and valuable experience, enabling them to develop their own essential employability skills.
The conference is an opportunity for our coordinators to receive training and guidance, communicate with other coordinators and Let’s Talk Science national staff, attend professional training and skill development sessions.
“Often coordinators will say that the National Outreach Conference is the most important thing we do to help them succeed in their leadership role as a coordinator,” said Isabel Deslauriers, Manager of Let’s Talk Science Outreach. “Later on, they build on the skills and experiences they acquired through Let’s Talk Science to help them jump start their careers after graduation – so the conference is a way to give back to them as well. We are looking forward to working with new and returning coordinators on these skills to help equip them for a successful program year and future.”
The conference includes an Outreach Banquet at Western University on Saturday, June 3 to celebrate the work of our National Let’s Talk Science Outreach coordinators and honour the National Volunteer award winners.
