First Steps

Step 1: Sign up

Contact us and meet with a coordinator for orientation and training.

Step 2: Identify your volunteer-partners and your teacher-partners

One of the coordinators will notify you about your partners. They are the people with whom you will be working throughout the year. You will have at least one volunteer-partner from Let's Talk Science. You will have one or more teacher-partners. These teachers are the ones for whom you can deliver workshops. You will be their main contact with Let's Talk Science.

Step 3: Contact your volunteer-partners and your teacher-partners

Establish contact with your volunteer-partners and decide which of you will contact the teachers with whom you are partnered. It is a good idea to make an appointment to meet with the teachers in person, if they agree. If you are a first-time Let’s Talk Science volunteer, it is helpful to visit the teachers with an experienced volunteer to help answer questions. If you don’t know anyone, please contact a Let’s Talk Science coordinator for assistance.

Step 4: Find out what the teachers want from Let's Talk Science

When contacting the teachers, tell them a bit about yourselves and Let’s Talk Science. Offer your services as a liaison with Let’s Talk Science and obtain details about the types and timing of activities that they may be interested in. Although we encourage you to do activities with these teachers over the course of the year, if you do not feel comfortable with the material they request, you can offer to find another Let's Talk Science volunteer who would be willing to do a workshop on that topic.
