My career path is

I graduated mechanical engineering and became a machine tool designer in my former country. After 10 years, I moved with my family to Canada. I started out as a machine operator. I worked hard at this job, developing skills and knowledge that allowed me to apply for other jobs as they became available. After being a machine operator, I became a machine setup specialist, then lead hand, project engineer, and program manager.

Each role helped me develop new skills and knowledge.  Now, as engineering manager, I am using all the skills and knowledge I have developed over the years to lead and support the engineers in my department.

What I do at work

I work at our plant that makes parts for major carmaker companies such as Ford, GM, Honda, etc.  Our plant is a large one with many engineers in our engineering department. My job is to manage this department. In this role, I make sure our programs and projects have the resources they need. I also make plans so that projects, that have not started yet, will have resources when they come on line. Part of my job is to build and maintain relationships with our customers. I’m also involved in hiring of new employees when needed and for assigning our engineers to various tasks and to training programs they may need.

In addition to my management role, I also get involved with technical challenges and troubleshooting when needed. I’m involved in looking for new business contracts and in new program launch planning. On a daily basis, I participate in meetings and conferences with customers, as well as with various equipment suppliers.
