This strategy supports students in synthesizing their learning of a main idea or principle.
Why use it?
- To support students' ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources.
- To encourage flexible thinking and support students’ ability to use different ways to represent their understanding.
- To use creativity as a way to engage students who are visually or artistically oriented.
How do I use it?
- In small groups, have learners brainstorm keywords that describe the topic.
- Have students use these words to create and record a catchy “bumper sticker” on a sentence strip that can be displayed on the wall.
- Encourage the use of pictures and symbols as well as text to convey and support their understanding of the topic.
Variations
- Students can brainstorm together but each creates their own individual bumper sticker.
- Could be completed digitally.
Using this Strategy
- “Keep Ponds Clean or Fish Get Sick” - a mnemonic that stands for Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
- “Hydrogen is Fon” - a reference to freedom of navigation that is used to determine which elements hydrogen forms hydrogen bonds with.
- “Gravity gets me down” - when exploring forces of gravity.
- “Entropy was arrested for disorderly conduct” - representing the measure of molecular disorder/randomness.
