Local Programs

Community Visits

Community groups (such as Scouts and Girl Guides), libraries, summer camps, after-school programs and community festivals can request volunteers virtually and in-person to incorporate hands-on/minds-on STEM learning in their programs. We’d be happy to set up a table or booth at your event to bring science to life for children and their families.

Our annual events include:

  • The BiOlympics
  • Family Literacy Day
  • SLOME Career Fair
  • Relay for Life
  • Girl Guides
  • Summer Camps
  • The Children's Museum
  • and more!

Rural Visits

We want all children across Canada to have access to exciting, hands-on STEM learning experiences. Bringing our volunteers to your school or community is free to you.

Over the years, we've received a lot of positive feedback from teachers and community leaders in rural areas that have said that the excitement level about science increased exponentially after our visit, with many students considering taking science courses at college or university.

Here are just a few of the rural areas that we have visited in the past:

  • Grand Bend
  • Thedford
  • Wallaceburg
  • Goderich
  • Seaforth
  • Hensall
  • St. Mary's
  • Chatham
  • Strathroy
  • Clinton
  • St. Thomas
  • Stratford
  • Brucefield
  • Walkerton
  • Hanover
  • Owen Sound
  • Aylmer
  • and many more!

To see if a volunteer is available to visit your community, fill in our Request a Visit form.

Lab Tours (all Grades)

Year-round

Our volunteers provide tours of their labs on the university campus so youth can see what it's like to do science research. Lab tours include hands-on/minds-on demonstrations and activities, as well as career profiles.

StemCellTalks

StemCellTalks Symposiums are full-day events which provide expert overviews of stem cell science and practical ethics, followed by breakout sessions with graduate students.

Let’s Talk Cancer (Grades 11-12)

In partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Research Information Outreach Team, this virtual two day event at Western explores the many facets of science and math that are integral to cancer research today. The day included speakers and a variety of activities designed to involve students directly in understanding how biology, chemistry, physics and math contribute to cancer research.
