A flower garden in the backyard
Lexie and Lennie the squirrels

Join Lexie and Lenny to read Kate Messner’s book, “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” and complete a hands-on science activity about the growing cycle.

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn all about the ecosystem of a garden and meet the creatures who inhabit it. They will learn about growing seasons and how plants grow from seed to maturity. Students will use everyday household items to make their own growing plant craft!

For this activity, students will need:

-A blank sheet of paper, cardstock, or a paper plate

-Construction paper of different colors, to make flowers, leaves and roots (OR pre-cut paper plant parts)

-A popsicle or craft stick (can be colored green ahead of time)

-Markers or pencil crayons

-Scissors

-Glue or tape

Younger students may require adult help cutting paper or the paper plate when assembling their craft. Educators can also prepare “plant parts” ahead of time by cutting them out, to facilitate the collage, and distribute these among students to be glued.
