Students will deepen their understanding of the concept of employability skills. Students will develop an awareness of opportunities available for those who have well-developed employability skills.

Students will identify the skills that employers look for in potential employees.
Students will recognize that they have skills and abilities that align with employer needs.
Students will make personal connection between their interests and current skills with the person in the career profile.

Students will be introduced to career development and begin thinking about different career options.

Students will explore the Let’s Talk Science careers resources and learn about career options that require, or benefit from, a background in STEM.

Students are introduced to career development as a lifelong process as they visualize who, what and where they want to be when they graduate.

This is the core activity for the Fish Market Survey Action Project. Students will collect samples of fish from local grocery stores or fish markets and prepare the samples for shipment to the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics in Guelph, Ontario.

In this introductory activity, students will read two articles about the issue of fish mislabelling and complete two graphic organizers to identify the issue, its implications and possible solutions. They will complete the organizers individually and in pairs, and then discuss the results with the whole class.

Students develop their observation and comparing and contrasting skills as they explore the size of dinosaurs.

Students will use observing and sorting & classifying skills to learn that dinosaurs are extinct animals that share common characteristics.

Students develop and apply algebraic reasoning, spatial sense/reasoning and communicating skills as they explore the math, science and technology in their name.

Students will recognize the benefit of seeking advice from those experienced in specific career areas that interest them.

Students will identify employability skills in which they are strong and those that need work, create an Employability Skills Profile and develop plans to improve their employability skills.

Students will explore the composition and characteristics of different local soils and learn about what makes soil healthy.

Students develop the skills of observing and recording observations as they explore how the water cycle works.

Students will learn about the different types of fasteners to investigate which fastener is best for a particular material or job and why.
