Arctic fox
Lexie and Lennie the squirrels

Join Lexie and Lenny to read Susan Avingaq and Maren Vsetula’s book, “Fishing with Grandma,” and complete a hands-on science activity about climate change and the Arctic!

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn all about the importance of the Arctic and its ice pack for the humans and animals living there. Through the book, students will learn about seasonal changes, adaptation needed to survive changes in weather and temperature, food sustainability and Indigenous fishing practices. Students will then use everyday household items to do two experiments to learn how climate change impacts the environment.

For this activity, students will need:

  • Ice cubes
  • 2 glasses
  • Water (room temperature)
  • 1 transparent container (ie. Tupperware sandwich container)
  • Rocks or modeling clay
  • Marker or tape
  • Blue dye (optional)

This activity is targeted at students in Grades 1 to 3. Younger students may still enjoy the activity and book but may require more adult help and support.
