Kids watching science experiment
Lexie and Lennie the squirrels

Join Lexie and Lenny as they welcome Farah Quaiser and Hajer Nakua, who will bring their book, “Khadija and the Elephant Toothpaste Experiment” to life.

This story sets the stage for a hands-on science activity that explores the fascinating world of chemical reactions, just like Khadija in the book!

You don't need to purchase the book to participate in the activity.

In this 45-minute activity, students will delve into the world of chemical reactions using common household items. They will create a mini version of the elephant toothpaste experiment using kid-friendly household materials: baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, and optional food colouring. Similar to the familiar volcano experiment, this experiment demonstrates the exciting results of combining solids and liquids!

For this activity, students will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • A small jar or bottle (e.g. baby food container, water bottle) or a small cup
  • A few drops of dish soap
  • A shallow dish (e.g. aluminum tray, pie plate, etc.) – to put on the desk to minimize mess.
  • A funnel (optional) – to help students put the vinegar and baking soda in their containers.
  • A few drops of food colouring (optional)
  • Measuring spoons (optional)
  • Paper towels (optional) - for cleaning any spills!
