Join Lexie and Lenny to read Stacy McAnulty and Stevie Lewis’s book, “Sun! One in a billion” and complete a hands-on science activity about the phases of a solar eclipse.

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn all about the sun and solar eclipses. Students will use everyday household items to create a foldable craft showing the phases of a solar eclipse.

For this activity, students will need:

  • 1 sheet each black, yellow, and white paper or cardstock  OR blank paper and yellow and black markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Pencil/pen
  • Optional: Round objects to trace around, 1 smaller (ie. a lid or coin, approx. 3-4 cm diameter), 1 larger (ie. a cup or larger lid, approx. 8-12 cm)

This activity is targeted at students in Grades 1 to 3. Younger students may still enjoy the activity and book but may require more adult help and support with designing their craft and cutting paper. For students who are less comfortable with scissors, the activity can be adapted as a drawing of the eclipse phases.
