Congratulations to the 11 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge Finalists!
Samsung Canada has announced the 11 finalist schools in Canada’s first-ever Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge, launched in the fall of 2015 to inspire Grade 6 to 12 students across the nation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
“Our youth across Canada have great STEM talent,” said Dr. Bonnie Schmidt, President and Founder of Let’s Talk Science. “The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Challenge really highlights the strength of our youth in this area and encourages them to develop their inquiry and problem-solving skills by using STEM to solve an everyday problem that they’re passionate about in their community. We’re thrilled at the results so far and are very pleased to be a partner with Samsung, The Learning Partnership and AsapSCIENCE on this initiative.”
In support of the Solve for Tomorrow Challenge, Let’s Talk Science developed a collection of tools and resources (available at www.ExploreCurioCity.org/SamsungSolve) for teachers to use in developing and implementing a successful STEM-based project. The resources are based on Let’s Talk Science’s expertise with engaging both educators and students in using STEM as a learning platform on a national scale for over 22 years.
Driving Student-Centred Skills Development and Technology-Based Learning
The 11 finalists were chosen from a pool of 55 semi-finalist submissions, each of whom created a short video documenting their school’s STEM solution to a local community issue. All entrants were challenged to demonstrate how they would apply STEM throughout each step of their inquiry project—from initial research and planning through to prototyping, refinement and implementation.
“We’ve seen so many creative, insightful, environmentally and socially responsible proposals,” said Dr. Schmidt. “It’s amazing to see the level of excitement and passion that these students and their teachers have for collaborative learning, problem-solving and innovation in their school and communities using STEM. The level of student engagement is high, right across the country, and that’s exactly what we were hoping to see.”
Let’s Talk Science commends all students and teachers for their engagement in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow and congratulates the 11 finalist schools who will move on for a chance to win one of two grand prizes of $50,000 in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow classroom technology grants and a visit from AsapSCIENCE.
