Happy National Volunteer Week!

Sunday April 24th to Saturday, April 30th is National Volunteer Week and we want to say thank you to our amazing volunteers for the critical work they do across Canada!

Possessing versatile skills and coming from a range of STEM and education backgrounds, Let’s Talk Science volunteers make contributions in various ways – whether it’s in-person or virtually through leading interactive activities in schools and community settings or contributing educator resources.

Let’s Talk Science volunteers dedicate their time to science outreach in various ways, all equally important!  Whether that be presenting virtual or in-person outreach activities in classrooms and at community events, editing online content to ensure accuracy, preparing materials for workshops or providing insight to youth about their research on a career panel.

If you have engaged with Let’s Talk Science programming, chances are that you have interacted with one or more of our many donor volunteers. In 2019-20, over 200 employees from 32 donor corporations gave over 300 hours to support in-person and virtual events engaging youth, educators and Let’s Talk Science volunteers across Canada. Participation ranged from judging contests to speaking engagements, completing career profiles, joining Let’s Talk Science sites for community events, and kit building to provide additional Outreach Activity materials. Without the help of our donors and donor volunteers, most of our successful programming provided at no cost would not be possible.

In 2021 Let’s Talk Science volunteers engaged with youth across Canada through participation in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge operating each week from February to May for kids in grades 6-8. Volunteers were also involved in the implementation and success of STEM Club and the Summer Daily Discovery Series.

 

Highlights from Let’s Talk Science outreach volunteers in 2020-2021

  • More than 416,000 interactions with children and youth  (including more than 73,500 youth interactions through  the Horizon Project)
  • More than 49,000 Indigenous youth  interactions
  • Engaged  children and youth from over  680 communities  from coast to coast to coast
  • Achieved over 21,000 interactions with parents/general public
  • Delivered over 4,100 hands-on/minds-on experiences
  • Worked in partnership with more than  3,100 educators
