Let’s Talk Science President Dr. Bonnie Schmidt receives one of Canada’s highest honours

On July 1st, Let’s Talk Science President and Founder, Dr. Bonnie Schmidt was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston. 

The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest honours, which "recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation." Dr. Schmidt is being recognized "for her leadership in fostering science literacy among primary and secondary school students across Canada, notably as the founder of Let’s Talk Science."

Let’s Talk Science is an award-winning, charitable organization focused on education and outreach to support learning and skill development in Canadian youth using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The organization was established in 1993 when Dr. Schmidt was completing her PhD in Physiology at Western University. Under her guidance, Let’s Talk Science has since grown into a leading national organization, reaching over 3 million Canadians.

Let’s Talk Science Board of Directors, staff and volunteers applaud Dr. Schmidt for receiving this prestigious honour. Dr. Schmidt will be invited to receive the Order of Canada at an investiture ceremony later this year.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II established the Order of Canada during Canada’s centennial year in 1967. The Order of Canada is divided into three levels: Companions, Officers and Members. Members of the Order of Canada are recognized "for their outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity." Since its creation, more than 6,000 people from all areas of society have been invested into the Order.
