Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: Since September 2015

Area of study: Geotechnical Engineering

Inspirational Moment: It is hard to choose just one moment. I am always fascinated by the many different ways students interpret the same activity. At an Engineering Symposium we participated in with Scouts Canada, the activity was to build a bridge to support water bottles using one roll of masking tape and two supports. It was interesting to see how each group interpreted the task, their thought processes and the teamwork involved.

Favourite Let’s Talk Science volunteering activity: Dynamic Dinos. I like working with the younger children and building the dinosaur model.

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science? Let’s Talk Science provides the perfect forum for me to blend two things that I am passionate about: volunteerism and STEM education. There is the misconception among many students that STEM subjects are difficult and boring, when in fact it is the basis of everything we are and do; from the makeup of our bodies to how skyscrapers are built. I love sharing my interests with children in a simple way that piques an interest in the sciences and fosters creativity and innovation.

Fun fact: I am from Trinidad and Tobago and every year over 10,000 endangered leatherback turtles visit our shores to nest. The average turtle weighs over 850 pounds! You are able to see the entire nesting process from laying of the eggs to the turtle hatchlings going out to sea on any given night during the nesting season.
