Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: 3 years

Area of study: I am currently a pharmacy student at the University of British Columbia.

Inspirational Moment: While teaching students how acids, bases, and the pH system works, there was a student who appeared completely uninterested in the experiments. After taking time to understand how the student was feeling and why they found the topic uninteresting, I was able to explain acids and bases in a way that clicked with the student. I could see their eyes light up when the topic clicked!

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science? Taking a small amount of time out of our week to interact with youth can have a profound impact on them. To this day, I still remember university students visiting my elementary school to facilitate science experiments – and I attribute my career choices to those moments. When you explain complex science concepts in a simple manner, you make science accessible to everyone – including those who aren’t interested in science. I choose to volunteer with Let’s Talk Science because we make science accessible and in doing so, influence youth to pursue higher education and a career in STEM!

Fun fact: Ketchup was used as a medicine back in the 1830s!
