Erica Mitchell
Let’s Talk Science Outreach Volunteer at University of Winnipeg

Erica loves inspiring youth and other volunteers to explore science, technology, engineering and math. As well, Erica enjoys the challenge of breaking down high-level biology concepts so that they’re easily understandable to younger children.

Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: 3 years

Area of study: Biology

Inspirational Moment: I love having the opportunity to see younger volunteers step up and try something new, like running an activity or reading a silly story. This past year one of the new volunteers asked to run an event under a program I organize. She did great! I believe it was a real confidence booster for herself and for myself. I love knowing that I have inspired others to continue the work I have done.

Favourite Let’s Talk Science volunteering activity: Handwashing! It’s applicable to any age or location, not to mention we get to see something INVISIBLE!

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science? I love working with children and I love science, it seemed like the perfect match. Since then, my experiences have given me the opportunity to mentor other students and really test how well I can explain university level Biology to a 5-year-old - you gotta know your stuff!

Fun fact: I also work in the Winnipeg theatre community and have had training in the production aspect of the field.
