Let’s Talk Science Volunteer at Memorial University

Sam has volunteered and coordinated Let’s Talk Science programs. She loves the Super Science Challenge because of the creativity that kids use in their designs!

Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: I volunteered for a couple years and was a coordinator during my undergrad. I started volunteering again this past fall.

Area of study: MSc student in the Department of Ocean Sciences

Inspirational Moment: After another female volunteer and I did an activity with a class, the educator wrote to us that some students in her class were surprised that the people who came to do science with them were women and that the girls in the class were especially excited to have female volunteers. It’s great that Let’s Talk Science is helping kids realize that they can become scientists, especially if they never thought that was a possibility before.

Favourite Let’s Talk Science volunteering activity:  I like the Super Science Challenges because of the creativity involved. Students never fail to come up with some really interesting designs!

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science? I love helping kids discover that they enjoy science and realize that they can be scientists. Their curiosity and enthusiasm is contagious and it's so great to be part of a program like Let’s Talk Science that offers these experiences to students and is free for teachers and schools to access.

Fun fact: When I was younger I did Irish dance for 9 years!
