Let’s Talk Science Volunteer at Ontario Tech University

Sarah loves teaching and encourages kids to explore, experiment, make mistakes and have fun learning science!

Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: I started volunteering with Let’s Talk Science in September 2020.

Area of study: I am currently at Ontario Tech University studying Bachelor of Education I/S with teachables in general science and physical education.

Inspirational Moment: Every moment I spend volunteering with Let’s Talk Science is inspirational! It is so amazing to see all the kids smiling and excited to explore science. One inspirational moment during my time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science was during a visit we had with the Beaver Scouts. All of the participants were so excited to learn about animal life cycles. They all had really great questions and were so engaged during the activity. Seeing how much these kids loved this science activity really made me want to pursue my career as a general science educator. I believe it is so important to encourage kids to have fun with science, explore, experiment, make mistakes and have fun learning because that is truly what science is all about. At the end of the presentation, the kids were so happy and were extremely thankful for the experience.

Favourite Let’s Talk Science volunteering activity: This is a hard question to answer because I truly love all of the activities for different reasons! I would say one of my favourite activities to teach is Amazing Aviators.

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science?: I became a volunteer for Let’s Talk Science because I wanted to gain more experience teaching kids about science. As I am an Ontario Tech Teacher candidate I took this opportunity to build my confidence in teaching and to increase my leadership skills. I now never want to stop volunteering because the program is so amazing!

Fun fact: I worked as a personal trainer for 2 years before moving back to my hometown to pursue my career in teaching. Also not related but I am obsessed with French Bulldogs!!!
