Let’s Talk Science Outreach Volunteer at McMaster University

Yotakahron was able to pursue her interests in travel, health, and encouraging Indigenous students as a volunteer with Let’s Talk Science Outreach.

Time volunteering with Let’s Talk Science: Since September 2012

Area of study: I hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Indigenous Studies, Master of Arts in Sociology. I am currently a medical student at McMaster University’s Niagara Regional Campus in the Class of 2020. Due to my training as a traditional doula, I have an interest in pursuing family medicine with a focus in obstetrics.

Inspirational Moment: I have had many Indigenous students stick around after we finish the activity to ask questions about my educational journey. I tell them about my experiences and reassure them that although it is difficult at times, achieving your goals is worth it. It always makes me so happy to talk to Indigenous youth and encourage them on their own journey.

Favourite Let’s Talk Science volunteering activity: Fight or Flight: The Science of Stress activity has been my favourite to teach thus far!

Why do you volunteer with Let’s Talk Science? Growing up on the Six Nations reserve and attending elementary school there, I knew that my class hardly ever had anyone come into our classroom that was Indigenous. I believe that it makes a difference for Indigenous youth, to be able to see other Indigenous people who have achieved their goals. My experiences – of living in residence/off-campus, studying abroad, pursuing a Masters, and medical school – can help to inspire them to pursue any dream they have and turn their dreams into reality.

Fun fact: I love travelling and have been to 43 countries so far! I am also currently building my own tiny house on wheels.
