Margaret Stephens Professional Development Bursary

This bursary recognizes volunteers who have demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, supporting STEM outreach and career-preparedness while enabling volunteers' continued growth.

The Margaret Stephens Professional Development Bursary funding comes through a generous donation from The Margaret & Andrew Stephens Family Foundation. The bursary is named in memory of Margaret Stephens, a lifelong learner who pursued an education in science at a time when it wasn’t traditional for women to do so.

Deadline for applications: June 30 annually

Bursary Amount: Up to 10 bursary recipients will receive a cash award of $1000.00.

Who can apply?

Through this bursary, Let’s Talk Science volunteers can be rewarded for participating in professional development and training offered by Let’s Talk Science. To be eligible for this bursary:

  • Volunteer must have contributed to Let’s Talk Science either through direct delivery to youth (in-person or online) or an indirect contribution such as developing or adapting resources, contributions to projects, events and initiatives. Volunteers who apply must complete at least two such activities between July 1st, 2023 and June 30th, 2024. Volunteering must be both logged and marked 'complete’ on the Volunteer Portal.  
  • Volunteer must complete at least four Let’s Talk Science provided Professional Development (PD) or training offerings between July 1st, 2023 and June 30th, 2024. This can include courses on our Volunteer Learning Management System, live webinars and in-person opportunities offered by Let’s Talk Science National office. Courses must be completed and logged on our Volunteer Portal, showing up on your Volunteer Record. 
  • Volunteer must submit a complete application form.
  • Site coordinators and/or paid positions are not eligible to apply for this award.
How to apply:
  • Applications must be submitted by June 30, 2024 using the online form or by email to outreach@letstalkscience.ca.
  • Application responses may be submitted in written, audio, or video formats to support accessibility.
  • Applications will be accepted and reviewed for eligibility on an ongoing basis, but awarded in July 2024. If an ineligible application is received, the applicant will be notified.
  • Bursaries will be sent out in July/August.
  • Volunteers and the bursaries will be showcased through our national website, social media, and email campaigns.
