Child saving money in a piggybank
Lexie and Lennie the squirrels

Join Lexie and Lenny to read David Descoteaux’s book, “Hot Potato!” and complete a hands-on science activity about financial literacy!

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn to recognize Canadian coins and bills, compare their values, and identify different ways to represent the same amount of money. They will also use everyday household items to make a money-saving box!

For this activity, students will need:

  • A small/medium-sized box or container (ex. Kleenex, tea box packaging, shoe box, etc.)
  • A ruler
  • Scissors
  • Writing utensils (ex. Pencils, markers, etc.)
  • Craft material to decorate the box (paper, markers, paint, glue or tape, self-adhesive glitter foam, stickers, felt sheets, etc.)
  • Optional: coins and bills

This activity is targeted at students in Grades 1 to 3. Younger students may need help understanding STEM concepts and making holes for their money in the box.

Join us for our weekly STEM Storytime series in English on Tuesdays at 1 pm ET! If you cannot make it to a live session, feel free to register, and you will be sent a link to the recording afterwards.
