Kids blowing up balloons

Join Lexie and Lenny to read Robert Munsch’s book, “Up, Up, Down” and complete a hands-on science activity about forces and motion!

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn all about how applying different forces affects how far an object travels. They will use everyday household items create their own pompom poppers.

For this activity, students will need:

  • A paper cup with the bottom already cut out, or a toilet paper roll
  • Scissors
  • Balloon
  • A piece of tape roughly the length of the circumference of the cup (duct tape or masking tape preferred)
  • Something small and light to launch, like pom-poms, mini marshmallows, pieces of a sponge or cotton balls

See the following image for a sample of a finished pompom popper: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YYS9k5bMX5Nayk-RY-msYp1k7_5nrwTD/view?usp=sharing

This activity is targeted at students in early years to Grades 3. Younger students may require adult assistance with some of the steps, such as those involving scissors.
