Lexie and Lennie the squirrels

Join Lexie and Lenny to read Ruth Tabacnik’s book, “Lara Capture the Sun,” and complete a hands-on science activity about light and solar energy!

In this 45-minute activity, students will learn all about the Sun and how to concentrate its light to harness its energy. Students will then create an Earth Day suncatcher using accessible materials.

For this activity, students will need:

  • Construction paper – at least one sheet per suncatcher
  • Clear tape or contact paper - enough to fill in the size of the suncatcher
  • Tissue paper of different colours (alternatives: tissue; natural alternatives: flowers, leaves, grass) - enough to fill in the size of the suncatcher
  • Scissors - 1 per suncatcher
  • Marker or other writing utensils – 1 per suncatcher

Younger students may need help to cut out the shape of their suncatcher. Students can also work in teams of two for each suncatcher.

Join us for our weekly STEM Storytime series in English on Tuesdays at 1 pm ET! If you cannot make it to a live session, feel free to register, and you will be sent a link to the recording afterwards.

You can register for upcoming sessions or access on-demand STEM Storytime events on our STEM Storytime Page
