Science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) skills more important than ever for Canadian youth
Let’s Talk Science brings STEM learning to households across Canada
LONDON, ON (April 20, 2020) - While the current reality of COVID-19 has created unique challenges, and an increased need for engaging online learning opportunities, Let’s Talk Science remains committed to supporting Canadian youth, their families and educators with English and French curriculum-aligned science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education programs and resources.
The COVID-19 crisis underscores the critical need for our work as science literacy and STEM skills underpin the global response. “STEM is at the cornerstone of Canada’s response. Scientific data is showcased daily, scientific researchers are seeking treatments and vaccines, and technology companies are innovating to be able to support our front-line healthcare needs.” says President and Founder of Let’s Talk Science, Dr. Bonnie Schmidt. “Youth need to understand that scientific literacy is increasingly required for engaged citizenship and the demand for people who can fill STEM-related jobs will only continue to increase.”
To help highlight the importance of STEM skills and STEM-related careers, the organization has partnered with ChatterHigh and Compugen to deliver a unique, career discovery experience with the Let’s Talk Careers Competition launching on April 20th. The competition invites participants to explore the wide variety of careers available through STEM education, while also encouraging them to pursue STEM learning - and they can earn prizes while doing so.
In addition to career exploration, Let's Talk Science has focused on delivering STEM resources and activities that support educators, caregivers and youth in engaging in at-home learning.
Visitors to the Let’s Talk Science website can:
- explore the new STEM at Home section – offering a collection of resources and activities for preschool to Grade 12 students;
- sign-up and participate in the Let’s Talk Science Challenge – an engaging, weekly online STEM knowledge challenge for students in Grades 6-8;
- discover a wide variety of educator resources including online professional development, and curriculum-linked resources and activities to share with students;
- and participate in 2 unique career-focused competitions: That’s a Real Job launching April 14, and the Let’s Talk Careers competition launching April 20.
