Time Needed for Activity

The students will identify and recognize their 5 senses when completing these activities. This activity goes well with the "Feast for the Senses" lending library kit.

What You Need

Materials Needed:

  • A story to read to the class (Recommended - "Parts" by Tedd Arnold)
  • Sample containers containing different smelling objects.
  • Animal glasses that show different animals when worn.
  • Toilet paper holders (one end covered in cardstock and one covered in nylon with different sound making materials inside)
  • Different objects with various textures for students to touch (clay, sandpaper, etc.)
  • Different foods/flavours to satisfy all flavour profiles (salt, sugar, etc.)

Guide:

What To Do

For each class you can set up stations for each sense, identifying the sense with cue cards. Sample cue cards are attached.
You can start off with a story, our favourite is "Parts" by Tedd Arnold.

SMELL

  • Using sample containers, cover them in duck tape and place different smelling objects in them.  This gives the children a chance to try and identify different smells.  We used: potpourri, gum, and an alcohol based hand sanitizer and candles.

SIGHT

  • We purchased animal glasses, that give the students a chance to see like a shark, chameleon, and and insect.  We also have color changing glasses.
  • Using a vision chart, get the students to test out which animal sees the best, including themselves.

HEARING

Make your own sound makers!

  • Cover a toilet paper roll with construction paper, and cover one end with nylon.
  • Place your sound making objects popcorn kernels, beads, rice, etc... inside the toilet paper roll and cover the end with nylon. You have a sound maker!
  • Get the students to experiment with loud and soft sounds.

TOUCH

  • Have different objects with different characteristics for them to touch. For example: have clay, sand paper, a squishy toy from the dollar store, etc..

TASTE

  • Make sure to check with the class before going for any allergies. If there are none, you can bring something to satisfy all the taste buds (example: salt and/or sugar)
