Eden Klein is an Education and Knowledge Exchange Specialist of Cancer Education for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
I was born/grew up in: I was born in Israel and grew up in Toronto, Ontario
I now live in: Toronto, Ontario
I completed my training/education at: I have an honours Bachelor of Science (BScH) in Biology from Queen's University and a Master of Science (MSc) in Molecular Science from Ryerson University.
I help design and implement programs that help improve the experience and outcomes for cancer patients. This includes the diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and end of life care. At work, my team and I collaborate with professionals and patients across Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. This includes the doctors, patients, nurses, leadership and other staff who are involved in cancer care and treatment. We look to find ways to make cancer care better. Better can mean better treatment, better access to care, better care experience, or more efficient.
I meet with people across the hospital to assess needs and create action plans. For each project, I create a knowledge translation plan. This helps make sure that everyone is aware of any new policies or procedures. Projects often involve the creation of an online education component. For this I use special software. I use STEM skills everyday whether it is for understanding the biology of cancer, designing a website, or analyzing data to evaluate programs and outcomes.
Problem solving is a big part of my job too. Projects often start when we are have a problem and given the task to address it. I start by getting a picture of the problem for all the people involved. I try to find the solution that meets the most needs that is within budget and scope. My science background helps me understand complex ideas and be able to communicate them in a way that is understandable to many different types of people. It also has helped me in project design and management.
I always liked science and medicine so I always thought I would be a doctor. I honestly didn't know that there were so many other professions in the medical space! While I was doing my undergraduate degree, I realized that I really liked doing research. This led me to do my Master's Degree in Molecular Science. Throughout that two-year degree, I found my passion in taking the science - the amazing discoveries - and talking about them and finding ways to implement them in everyday life. That's what brought me to learn more about Knowledge Translation and to follow a career in it.
I get excited about finding ways to work with many different professionals altogether on a solution that will benefit patients and their families.
A cancer diagnosis can be very difficult for a person and their family. It is very rewarding to be able to help make their journey easier.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family (including my 4 month old baby!). I also enjoy the outdoors, working out, baking and playing video games.

My career path is
