Learn About My Career

I lead a team that develops canola crops by breeding plants with traits we are looking for.

I was born/grew up in: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

I now live in: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

I completed my training/education at: Bachelor of Agricultural Biology and Biotechnology, University of Saskatchewan. Master of Business Administration, Thompson Rivers University

I lead a team in the lab and greenhouse. We develop new canola plants using tissue culture methods and breeding crosses. When our experiments don't go as planned, we come up with new techniques and try a different approach.

My knowledge of plant biology and genetics helps me understand our data. I can make informed decisions about which plants to select. I have also learned to use specialized equipment in the tissue culture lab, molecular lab, and greenhouses. This has helped me manage a team that      produces and characterizes a large number of plants each year.

I was lucky to have grandparents who worked in science. From a young age, I was interested in science and experimentation. My grandfather encouraged me to explore research opportunities in agriculture. And my grade 11 science teacher gave me a love for plants and their incredible nature.

What excites me is the chance to work with plants and data. I also like being able to work on projects with other scientists. We interpret data and make informed decisions about which plants to select for breeding. We make sure the plants we select have the traits, which will help farmers grow food more effectively. It's very rewarding to be a part of this process. I like knowing that our work is making a positive impact on the world.

Agriculture is a necessary part of our daily lives. My work helps make sure we can grow plants for the food and materials we need.

Spending time with my family is something I cherish. This includes my husband, our two daughters, and our two furry friends. We enjoy making memories at the lake and hitting the ski slopes in the winter.

One way to get experience and build connections is through summer student and co-op options. These provide hands-on experience. They can be a great way to learn more about the field. Also, finding a mentor can be very helpful. Look for experienced professionals in your field. They can offer guidance and support as you navigate your career. A good mentor can provide valuable insights and advice to help you grow and succeed.
