Learn About My Career

Keith Bailey is an Owner Pharmacist for Shoppers Drug Mart.

I was born/grew up in: Twillingate, NL

I now live in: St. John's, N

I completed my training/education at: I completed a B. Sc. Pharm (1996) and MBA (2005) both from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The role of pharmacist has evolved to be a key wellness leader in the community. On the medical side, we make sure medications are safe, effective and correct for individuals. On the wellness side, we also provide education on over the counter products as well as advice on diet, exercise and healthy living. Pharmacists also assess and prescribe for minor ailments, provide vaccination programs and other areas like screening for diabetes and cholesterol. The STEM skills I use are those related analytics, solving health related problems, and measuring correct dosages for patient needs. I also interact with nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals.

I have had many roles in the pharmacy profession in my career. I apprenticed at several pharmacies around my home town of Twillingate. After this, I worked in an independent pharmacy in Labrador. From there I worked at various Wal-Mart pharmacy locations around Newfoundland. Then I changed my career path to work in pharmacy operations for 13 years with Shoppers Drug Mart across Atlantic Canada. In the past three years, I have moved back into ownership of two locations in metro St. John's. Volunteerism in the profession has always been important to me. I have served in many capacities including Chair of the NL Pharmacy Board, President of the Pharmacists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, and teaching at Memorial University. You get back what you put into the profession in terms of satisfaction.

My motivation comes from seeing my teams succeed and patients living healthier lives. When we are able to affect individuals as a wellness hub for our communities, we all succeed.

The best part of my day is when I am able to help patients live healthier lives through the correct use of medications. This includes providing education on these medications, as well as wellness and preventative health. Directly connecting with a patient and truly helping them is a privilege.

Outside of work, I enjoy the great outdoors, hunting and fishing and am an avid runner. Exercise provides a great escape and keeps my mental health strong.

Visit a pharmacy (hospital, community) in your area and spend a little time chatting to a pharmacist you know. Mentoring and getting to know what pharmacy is about with help you in your decision.
