Volunteer Activity - Alternative Science Facts

3D Printed Animal Tracks

Participants learn how to identify animals that may live in their environment using “signs”. Then, they will learn how photogrammetry can be used to scan and make digital models out of animal tracks found in nature so that they can be 3D printed.

Information Technology

Code and Go Mice

Welcome to the science of computational thinking! In this workshop, students learn how to code using a Code and Go Robot Mouse which can be programmed with travel directions to navigate through mazes.

Information Technology

Code and Go Mice - Community Event

The goal of this activity is for students to program a mouse to get from the starting position to the cheese wedges without going on squares occupied by cats or mouse traps.

Information Technology

Coding with Ozobots

Students will learn some foundational programming concepts and develop computational thinking skills through several screen-free activities.

Earth and Environmental Sciences

Trees for Tomorrow

In this workshop, students will explore what makes up a healthy forest, and how tree and soil health is important for sustaining ecosystems. Students will consider how human actions affect forests, and how forests are important in combatting climate change. Discussions will focus on positive actionable steps students can take to protect plant and soil health in their communities.

Engineering

Transportation and the Environment - Virtual Edition

In this workshop, students examine current and potential energy sources used for transportation, learn about fuel cell cars, explore the various types of fuels used in transportation and design their own vehicle.

Earth and Environmental Sciences

Climate Change Expedition - Virtual

Students will analyze historical, long-term trends in climate and explore environmental process through hands-on activities to gain an understanding of weather and climate in Northern Canada and relate to their own experiences with local weather patterns to discuss the changing climate in the north.

Biology Volunteer Activities

Bird's Nest

Students read a book about nests and then build their own bird's nest.

Physics

Pulleys

Experiment with different pulleys to lift a water bottle.

Biotechnology

Paper DNA

Students participate in a role-play to demonstrate the structure of DNA.

Biology

Candy DNA

Make a DNA model out of candy!

Earth & Environmental Sciences

Pack and Prepare

Students will rank the supplies given for an expedition to the Arctic for scientific research in order of importance.

Earth & Environmental Sciences

Albedo

Students conduct an experiment to explore the albedo effect.

Earth & Environmental Sciences

Climate Change Expedition

Students will analyze historical, long-term trends in climate and explore environmental processes to gain an understanding of weather and climate in Northern Canada.

Earth & Environmental Sciences

Hydration Nation

This workshop explores water quality and the importance of healthy water systems.
