This is a comprehensive lesson plan on sailing - the history of sailing, parts of a sailboat, the physics of floating, wind, physics of sails, keeling and modern sails. The kit also includes an activity where students make a sailboat and hold a regatta.

What You Need

  • Mast: straws 
  • Sails: cloth
  • Battons: toothpicks 
  • Hull: Milk carton
  • Keel: paper clip wrapped in tin foil 
  • Weights: pennies 
  • Lake: Two large buckets
  • Wind: Fans

What To Do

Procedure

  • Create a sailboat with the materials - Be aware of Stability, Weight, Length of Hull, Width of Hull, Size and Shape of Sails Number of Sails.
  • After team has created sailboat it is time to race the boats.

Regatta set up:

  • Two large buckets side by side filled with water.
  • Fans on same end of table.
  • Place sail boats at end hold on until start is called.
