Learn About My Career

I sell used rental cars to car dealerships and purchase new vehicles for our rental fleet.

I was born/grew up in: I was born in Scarborough Ontario and grew up in Oshawa Ontario.

I now live in: Bowmanville, Ontario

I completed my training/education at:  Western University with a Honours degree in Geography, Urban Development and Centennial College for Ontario Motor Vehicles Industry Council (OMVIC) certification

I work with a team of five members in the re-marketing division of Enterprise Holdings. There are two main parts to my job.  The first is to sell off our older rental cars. Most of my sales are to car dealerships. The other part of my job is to buy new cars for my company to rent to customers.

I work with many people in this field every day. I am always building and maintaining relationships. This is critical to the success of my work.

There are always decisions that I have to make. In order to do this, I follow a series of processes. I ask questions to help me collect the information that I need. I also get input from other people I work with and make sure the decision make use of the key facts. Some of my decisions use large data sets. To make sense of large collections of information, I use different formulas and software. Using this type of data helps make sure my decisions are in the company’s best interest.

Finally, I use my math skills to determine things like the best price to sell or purchase a car. I have to factor in data that can change on a daily basis. It’s important to be able to do this math quickly, in my head, as I negotiate prices with my contacts.

In high school, I was not sure exactly what I wanted to do. I was interested in business and economics. I decided to go to university to do a business degree. Once I was there, urban planning caught my interest. It turned out to be a way to continue taking economics and business courses to apply to land development.

When I left university, I worked for a commercial real estate/land development firm. Later, I decided I wanted to try my hand at owning my own business. I was always interested in sports and collected sports cards as a child. Building on this interest, I ran an independent business selling sports cards and memorabilia for about ten years. By then, I was looking for a change.

An opportunity was presented to me at Enterprise Holdings. I knew that Enterprise as it was a well-known, private company who had a good reputation for training and promoting staff.  I used the business skills I had developed in my own business and became the Manager of a car rental location. I then moved within the company to the position I am in now.

I like that I have a lot of independence in my work and the ability to make my own decisions. I also like the variety in my work. Each day, and each transaction I make, is different. This career allows me to apply my interest and skills in business development and data analysis.

My work contributes to the success of many other small businesses and their employees. I work closely with these partners to ensure their business, as well as the company I work for, are both successful. If they succeed, we succeed!

I enjoy being outside. I play in a number of baseball and softball teams and am an avid golfer. I still connect sports cards as a hobby.

Be open and accept change. Also, be prepared to evolve as opportunities arise. If you ask ‘when would I ever use math’ while you are in school, you will be surprised where you will need it!
