Janessa Roy
Aromatherapist & Teacher
Learn About My Career
Janessa Roy is an Aromatherapist & Teacher, located in Manitoba.
I was born/grew up in: Winnipeg, MB
I now live in: Ile des Chenes, MB
I completed my training/education at: I have a Bachelor of Applied Science (Substance Abuse/Addiction Counselling) from the University of Lethbridge. I also have a Masters of Education (Counselor Education/School Counseling and Guidance Services) from Curry College, and a Post Baccalaureate degree (School Counseling) from the University of Manitoba. I also have completed a certificate in Holistic Studies from Essence of Thyme College of Holistic Studies
As a schoolteacher, I prepare lessons and assess how well my students have mastered the curriculum. As a counsellor, I provide counselling services on a variety of issues. Right now, I am in a half time position teaching French. As an aromatherapist, I assess clients based on the symptoms they have. I plan blends and products to address their needs and apply treatments. I also teach adult classes about holistic wellness. This is my favorite activity as it aligns with my teaching background.
I did not plan to become a teacher even though my mother was a teacher. I have always had a passion for mental and physical well-being and for helping people. After high school, I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science that focused on substance abuse and addiction counselling. I worked with youth as an Educational Assistant in a program for youth at risk. The salary was good and I enjoyed the work. However, it was not a secure career path so I went back to school and completed a Masters degree in counseling.
Shortly after this, my brother passed away. It was a very traumatic experiences and I was struck with immense grief. I needed to step back to focus on healing. Aromatherapy was part of my healing process. I found it personally beneficial so I signed up to learn more about it so I could help others. There are really two parts to being an aromatherapist. The first is educating your clients about the safe use of essential oils and wellness. The second part is the business side: working as an aromatherapist. This is not a big part for me but I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others. I create posts and videos for anyone to view at no cost to them. I focus on alternative treatment strategies for overcoming addictions. These include meditation and body movement / exercise. There is a lot of chemistry in the use of essential oils as some oils can be toxic if not used correctly.
I love helping people reach their goals and overcome their troubles.
When I teach my students, I am helping prepare them for their futures. This can be the next courses they will do, the next grades they will enter, or for their future careers. When people leave an aromatherapy session they feel relaxed and recharged. They also say they feel inspired from the teachings and strategies I provide.
I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with my family, nature, and animals.
Follow your dreams and don’t let the opinions of others influence you. Believe in yourself. You’re more powerful than you know!
