As a project manager at the Canadian Space Agency, Miriam makes sure projects get done on time and on budget.

About me

I was born/grew up in: I was born and raised in Ottawa, ON

I now live in: I am currently living in Montreal, QC

I completed my training/education at:  I completed my degree in Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, ON.

What I do at work

My work at the Canadian Space Agency involves coordinating, discussing issues, problem solving, and communicating! I use my understanding of engineering to make informed recommendations. The best thing about project management is the opportunity to work on different projects in different areas. I also get to work with a new group of people each time.

Communication and time management are two key skills to master in project management (and any field!). As a project manager, you share information to people at different levels and involvement with the project. It's important to know what information is important to them. It is also important to communicate that information clearly and effectively. I always work to engage those around me and involve them in my processes.

My career path is

In high school, I enjoyed chemistry, physics and math. This led me to decide to study engineering. My interest in aircrafts and space led me to choose aerospace as my specialty. After graduation, I did outreach at the university. I started a mentorship program within the faculty of engineering for high school students. I joined the Canadian Space Agency a few years later. The key is to remain motivated, determined and have supportive people around you!

I am motivated by

I love that I get to work on projects that have a direct impact on the lives of Canadians. These projects have the ability to improve our daily lives. The development of space projects themselves are fascinating. This is because they touch on so many different areas of expertise. I enjoy that I get to work with a variety of people.

How I affect peoples’ lives

Satellites provide data to help us in our day-to-day lives. Some of the projects I work, or have worked, on assist with monitoring air quality, wildfire monitoring, studying pollution, and a variety of other areas!

Outside of work I

I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I enjoy hiking, traveling, and finding activities/events going on in the city! I also participate in youth outreach. This is something that is very important to me. I sit on the Board of Directors of a non-profit targeting the engagement of youth.

My advice to others

Take chances and open yourself up to different opportunities. STEM is more than just math and science that you learn in school. We use these skills in all aspects of our lives. A STEM background can lead to many career opportunities. The options are endless!

When I was a student, I enjoyed:
  • Math
  • Science
When I was a student, I would have described myself as someone who:
  • Brought people together
  • Liked helping people
  • Organized activities for my friends
  • Liked reading
  • Always threw the best parties
