Go on a transportation scavenger hunt in this hands-on activity. How many different types of vehicles can you identify?

What You Need

  • Piece of paper
  • Pencil
  • Optional: digital camera or mobile phone with camera

Safety First!

Always accompany young children near roads and moving traffic. Be sure to stay a safe distance away from the road when observing and recording.

What To Do

  1. When out for a walk or a drive, bring along a pencil and paper to have a transportation scavenger hunt.
  2. Each time a different type of vehicle is observed, record it on the sheet. This could be done with pictures (hand drawn or photographed), with words or both. If desired, record the observations in categories on the sheet of paper, such as transportation on land (e.g., road, rail, etc.), on water or in the air.
  3. Look at your results. Sort and count the numbers of vehicles in each category. Which type of vehicle did you see the most? Are these results surprising?

Transportation is a form of technology designed and made to move people and things from one place to another. There are many different types of transportation.

Vehicles help us move people and things around within our communities, between communities, across the country and even around the world. They make the work of moving and carrying easier and often faster. Different vehicles are made to travel in different places - on land, on water and in the air. Vehicles are also designed for carrying different types of loads. Tanker trucks can carry liquids like gasoline and milk. Trains can carry people, animals, packaged products and even cars. A simple vehicle, like a bicycle, can make getting to the park or school much faster!

  • Repeat the scavenger hunt on a different day and/or at a different time of day. Compare the results to the first time you tried it. Are there differences? Why or why not?
