Artificial intelligence is a broad term used to the development of computer systems that can do tasks that normally require human intelligence. These include things like recognizing images and speech and making decisions.

Although it is quite a young field, AI technologies applications already exist in a variety of domains; from the web, to medicine, to self-driving vehicles and much more. Young Canadians have much to gain in knowing more about this technology that is developing rapidly and will take an important role in their future. Canadian scientists are working in the development of technologies that can help humankind find solutions to the modern problems we are facing, all the while thinking about the ramifications to ensure those technologies are applied in a fair way for all humankind.

Here are some Let’s Talk Science resources to help you learn more about artificial intelligence:

"Let's Talk AI: The future of Artificial Intelligence for intelligent humans" Symposium Video

Robot and Human ( mohamed_hassan from Pixabay)

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digital shift at a surprising pace - but also served to expose the inequalities and injustices in our society. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is promising solutions to global problems - but could make them so much worse.

With intelligent technologies quickly outperforming humans, what is the role today’s young leaders will play in the world of tomorrow? Can we use AI to build a better future? Is there space for non-technical students to get involved? This 2-hour event will provoke debates, inspire action and encourage teens to consider what their unique perspective and skillset can bring to AI.

This symposium was presented in partnership with Kids Code Jeunesse.

Careers

Learning about the professionals involved is ideal to establish relations between STEM studies and skills, and the real world. Below are some suggested career profiles to show the variety of people working with Artificial Intelligence.

  • What is artificial intelligence?
  • What do you think of dystopian movies where robots take over the world? Are they impossible of a fair warning?
  • In what areas are computers better than humans? Where are humans better? Do you think we will ever be surpassed in those areas?
  • Have you ever thought about how AI might disrupt your current career plans?
  • What jobs might disappear because machines are better at doing them? What new jobs will be created?
  • You can use the KWL: What I Know, What I Want to Know, and What I Learned Learning Strategy to introduce the topic.

  • AI Case Study Lesson focused on the trucking industry

  • Initial discussion

    • Using the questions above, discuss the topics with students. This can be done in the classroom or online, you can also have an asynchronous discussion by using a collaborative platform in which students can share their thoughts and opinions on the different questions. This option gives more space for introvert expression.
