Format

This graphic organizer helps students understand the details of what they read. It combines aspects of traditional five W’s strategies with the critical thinking skills involved in comparing and contrasting.

Why Use It?

  • To consolidate learning after reading or viewing new material
  • To help students answer different kinds of questions about two subjects or concepts that are presented in the same document or video
  • To highlight the similarities and differences between two subjects or concepts

Tips for Success

  • Choose a text, video or primer that includes a significant amount of information about two subjects or concepts.

How do I use it?

  • Prior to using the (Five W’s and an H)2 template with the class, you will need to customize it for the reading/video you have chosen. On the digital copy, complete the six questions that appear in the left-hand column of the chart and fill in to the two subjects/concepts at the top of the chart.
  • Assign an article/primer/video to read or view.
  • Provide students with the (Five W’s and an H)2 Reproducible Template (see right).

  • Review the question categories if necessary and have students complete the chart.
  • Once students have completed the chart, have a class discussion about the similarities and differences between the two subjects/concepts. These could be marked on using highlighting markers, etc.

Variations

  • Students could complete the chart in pairs or in small groups rather than individually.

Extensions

  • Have students generate new questions, using the Five W’s and an H, which could be asked about the two subjects/concepts.
