This strategy helps students by providing a safe context for discussing ideas, exploring new concepts or content and applying learning in different contexts.
Why use it?
- To provide a safe context for discussing ideas before sharing, discussing new ideas or content and making connections to past learning or experiences.
- To support students in synthesizing new learning.
- To support students in applying learning to a new context.
How do I use it?
- Pose a question or provide a prompt that invites discussion.
- Invite learners to walk around the room (or outside) with a partner, or a trio if need be, and share their thinking in response to the question or prompt.
- Provide a time frame to learners for their discussions. When this time is up, ask them to rejoin the group.
- Invite small groups to share key ideas from their discussions with the large group.
