Learn About My Career
I survey all different types of ships to make sure they are safe to operate.
I was born/grew up in: Conception Bay South, NL
I now live in: Conception Bay South, NL
I completed my training/education at: Diploma of Technology program in Naval Architecture from Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
I work for the American Bureau of Shipping. We develop standards for the design, construction, and operation of marine and offshore equipment. We make sure that everything working on the ocean follows national and international rules. This helps protect the natural environment. It also helps create a safer workplace. I inspect a ship’s structure and machinery to make sure they meet standards. I also make sure their navigational equipment and safety equipment are also working properly. I also check the electrical system, electronics and make sure there are no leaks or worn parts.
After I completed the Diploma of Technology program in Naval Architecture, I worked in a variety of jobs. Not every one of them was related to the offshore. Each gave me new experiences and allowed me to develop my work skills.
I love that every day is different. You never know what job will pop up. You are constantly on multiple ships every day.
We make sure the ships are safe to operate for the crew, environment, and marine life.
I enjoy sports and I coach soccer. I love spending time with my kids and being at our cabin.
You never know what job you will get. Stay open and optimistic. There are many different career paths in this industry.
