Very few things in day to day practice and with consulting are textbook cases. Often I have to problem solve and put the pieces of each puzzle together to come up with a treatment. The process of helping someone is the biggest challenge and also the biggest reward. Critical thinking and analysis play a major role in this process. As a chiropractor, we are taught from day one that listening skills are most important. Also you have to see the human body from a global perspective. Putting all the information into a plan of management that includes treatment and recommendations for exercises and improved lifestyle choices is not easy. But it certainly is fulfilling!
I completed an undergraduate degree in Biology (Honours) even though I knew from the start that I did not want to spend my life in front of a microscope. The critical thinking and analytical skills that I developed during that time have served me well in my chosen career. While I did not know that I always wanted to be a chiropractor, I did know that I wanted a career in the health field. My dad and sister had visited chiropractors over the years and were impressed with how they were helped. I, myself, had not been to a chiropractor, but after researching the profession I decided to give it a try. I was fortunate to be accepted into the program and decided to give it one semester. I immediately fell in love with the curriculum. The rest, as they say, is history.
Be sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. Clearly, you have to make a living at whatever you choose, but it is healthcare first. Keeping this in mind, will make you happier and ultimately keep your patients happier.
Outside of the office, I take my running quite seriously. I enjoy weight lifting and going to the gym. Spending time with family and friends is important. After a busy week, some well deserved me time and relaxing to my favorite music and reading is always enjoyed.
On a daily basis in clinic I see a variety of people from all walks of life who usually are experiencing pain. After taking a detailed history, my fist job is to determine whether or not I can help. This involves using my years of clinical experience and current research and guidelines to help guide that decision making. If appropriate, treatment involves hands on treatment and exercise. I use knowledge of many subjects to decide which treatments are needed. This involves using my knowledge of anatomy, neurology, nutrition, body mechanics and exercise and fitness. Sometimes I work solo and other times I work with a variety of health care professionals. It really is all encompassing!
As a health care consultant I assist case managers in helping injured workers. In this role I do not see any patients. My work includes reviewing the relevant parts of a file and offering opinions on a variety of topics. These topic can include expected recovery, the necessity for treatment and reasonable care. In this process I follow policies and recommendations from current guidelines. I combine this with my clinical knowledge to form my opinions on what is needed for each person. I regularly meet with other consultants: medical doctors, occupational therapists and physiotherapists as part of my job.
