Head, Heart, Hands
This learning strategy encourages students to engage their head for critical analysis, their heart for emotional reflection, and their hands for practical application of what they have learned.
Why use it?
- To support holistic learning by incorporating cognitive, emotional, and practical dimensions.
- To foster deeper understanding, personal connection, and real-world application of an idea.
- To enhance student engagement.
Tips for success
- Share your own experiences or reflections, demonstrating vulnerability. This can help create a sense of trust and openness in the classroom.
How do I use it?
- Provide prompts for each of the following categories:
- Head (Cognitive/Logical): What do you think about what you have heard/learned/discovered?
- Heart (Emotional): How do you feel about what you have heard/learned/discovered?
- Hands (Practical): How can you use what you have heard/learned/discovered?
- Invite learners to respond to each of the prompts as a self-reflection.
Variations
- Provide learners with an outline of a person to record their thoughts and ideas in writing.
- Invite learners to express their thoughts and ideas orally with a partner or in small groups before sharing with the class.
