Learn About My Career

I create chemicals that are added to gasoline so it will burn cleaner in the automobile’s engine.

I was born/grew up in: Kolkata, India

I now live in: Calgary, Alberta

I completed my training/education at: I have a Bachelor of Technology in plastics engineering and a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering

I lead a global team and manage activities around creating safety data sheets for chemicals we produce. These safety data sheets help make sure the chemicals are used safely and that those using them know the precautions they must take. This helps protect the users and the environment. To do this, I use my knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes to communicate hazards and take adequate precautions. There is a lot of problem solving involved in this process.

My work also helps our customers use our materials in a sustainable manner. For example, I develop additives that are added to gasoline to help them burn cleaner in the automobile’s engine and give better performance. I ensure these chemicals are registered in a national database so others can access them.

Since my team is spread across several countries, most of our meetings take place virtually. We use video and voice conferences. Occasionally, we have face to face meetings.

I had no clue about my current job when I was in High School! Chemistry always amazed me, especially the impact it has on daily life. Doing experiments in the lab triggered my interest in chemistry. I had some amazing teachers and mentors who helped me along the way.

After I graduated high school, I completed a Bachelor of Technology in plastics engineering. I continued to complete a PhD in chemical engineering. I think getting my doctorate was the ultimate training. It prepared me to become resilient, patient and observant. I did an internship with the company where I currently work while I was completing my education. I have been working for this company for 15 years. I have had different roles and have worked all over the world.

I am proud that my job has a positive impact on people and the environment. The work I do helps protect the environment and keeps people safe. I also enjoy my work. I like that my job keeps changing and that I get to learn new things all the time. I also love meeting new people and working with them.

Making sure users are aware of any hazards is key for the sustainable use of chemicals. Chemicals are used everywhere and in almost everything we do. People need to be made aware if there are risks with the chemicals they use and how to address them. Providing this information is a big part of my job.

I do some sports, (cricket/soccer) and follow them as well. I am an avid reader of crime novels. I spend as much time as possible with my family. I like to travel, and my work has allowed me to travel to 3 different continents and to numerous countries.

Follow your passion! Get a mentor. Don’t give up easily. Unleash and demonstrate your potential using whatever opportunity you may get.
