Learn About My Career

Kevin Donovan is the Chief Operating Officer for McConnell Transport Ltd.

I was born/grew up in: I was born Bathurst, NB grew up in the Greater Moncton, NB area

I now live in: Riverview, NB Canada

I completed my training/education at:  I attended Saint Francis Xavier University in the Physical Education Program.  I then completed a Business Administration Certificate at NBCC - Moncton, NB.  I have completed additional certifications and programs at St Mary's School of Business and Ivey School of Business.

As the Chief Operating Officer (COO), my key activities involve reviewing data that measure the success of the company. I review our financial information and monitor cash flow (i.e., how much we earn versus how much we pay out). I also meet with managers and spend time walking the floor to check in with the people doing the front line work. I am involved in decisions relating to discipline, spending, and new projects. I am also involved in decision making on the best way to resolve any operational or customer issues or concerns.

I knew little of the transportation industry when I was in high school. When I graduated high school, I wanted to teach physical education. I attended university but hurt my back so could not participate in the physical program. I took time off and enrolled in a business administration certificate program. I really enjoyed the program! When I graduated, I got a job with a large commercial transportation company in my hometown. I worked my way into management and found that I enjoyed the role. While my education has helped me over the course of my career, it was the knowledge I gained from working with good leaders that has helped me grow. I enjoy the fact that every day is different and that there are new challenges to focus on daily. I enjoy solving problems customers may have to improve our service. I also enjoy rolling out a new project that will improve workflow. Finding better ways to improve and grow the business is very satisfying.

I enjoy the work I do as I get to interact with different people every day. I have new challenges and opportunities every day. The transportation industry is an important part of the supply chain for the items people look to buy. This includes food, beverages, clothing, building material, and household items. Since commercial vehicles move all these items, I help people access things they need.

I enjoy reading, both fiction and nonfiction. I run almost daily and enjoy going to the gym. I play pick up hockey. Being active helps me relax, gives me time to think and keeps me healthy.

I would advise young people to learn more about the transportation industry. There are many rewarding career opportunities in this industry. In addition, it is growing and essential for our economy.
