Learn About My Career

Vivek is an electrical engineer who works for Ontario Power Generation.

I was born/grew up in: Delhi, India

I now live in:  Thunder Bay, ON

I completed my training/education at:  I have a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. I am a licensed Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists, BC. I am also a Certified Project Manager via the Project Management Institute

My biggest task is asset management. This involves the use of specialized testing equipment. I also use my electrical engineering background and my skills in data analysis and mathematics. One of the key areas I do this in is in the investment management. My job there is to find the right value of the capital being spent. Some of these decisions I make on my own, when they fall within my field of expertise. Other decisions have to be made with groups and with subject matter experts.

I have wanted to work in this industry from a young age. I studied electrical engineering in university. A campus placement put me on the path to the position I have now. A mentor in this same field helped me to make the right decisions to get to where I am. When I came to Canada, I was a foreign-trained engineer. I had to work hard to get my credentials accredited. Eventually I became a licensed professional engineer in Canada. In addition to this, I took a number of short courses along the way. Some courses were to improve my technical knowledge or skills (e.g., R programming, AutoCAD). Other courses were to improve my management and leadership skills. I completed the Six Sigma Black Belt program. This is a set of tools and techniques used in industry to improve production processes and guarantee quality. Check my LinkedIn profile for more information on my career path.

Working with technology and being given the chance to innovate are what gets me excited at work. Leadership and collaboration make the job enjoyable. I like the teamwork aspect of the job. I also enjoy working in a diverse and inclusive environment.

Asset management touches on many aspects of the workplace. These include the people, the processes, and technology. I support improvement opportunities within project management systems. This means that I am a key partner in making the work process as safe and efficient as possible. Ontario Power Generation is working to provide a clean and sustainable energy supply for its customers. My skills and knowledge help OPG achieve their goals. By doing my job well, I’m helping affect the lives of millions of people!

To relax, I like to meditate or to take a brisk walk. In my spare time, I volunteer to help foreign-trained workers find engineering employment in Canada.

Work hard and give your best.
