Learn About My Career

My company installs oil filtration systems on all types of diesel engines.

I was born/grew up in: I was born in Toronto, ON, moved to central NL when I was 7 years old.

I now live in: Conception Bay South, NL

I completed my training/education at:   I have a Bachelor of Arts) (Economic Geography) and Bachelor of Science (Geographic Information Systems) both from Memorial University of Newfoundland

I am the owner of Oil Filtration Solutions Ltd. As the only employee, I complete a variety of tasks. These vary from day to day. Most of my tasks include generating new business. I do this through marketing and direct sales calls/email as well as in person meetings. I also am responsible for shipping and receiving, and accounting. I perform installations of our oil recycling technology on Diesel engines. I also install it on heavy duty equipment including marine vessels, road building equipment, and forestry equipment.

I didn’t know what I wanted to do career wise when I started university. I enjoyed geography. After taking a couple of courses, I got really interested in Economic Geography. Later I became interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). After completing a Bachelor of Arts, I decided to complete a BSc. Together these formed the basis of a career in Marketing and Advertising. Later I left this job to start my own business. At the start, it was difficult introducing a new technology into a new market. However, I overcame these challenges them with perseverance and some patience.

I enjoy speaking to my customers to hear how well the technology works. I love hearing how well it helps improve their bottom line and economic viability.

The Generation 2 Filtration (G2F) oil recycling technology reduces the amount of hazardous lubrication and hydraulic oils need in equipment. Because less is needed, less has to be stored or transported. This reduces the chances of spills. The G2F technology removes ultra-fine contamination from these oils. It also removes water if it enters the oil while in use. Basically, the G2F recycles the oil that is being used by the machinery while the machinery is in action.

My job is rewarding because the technology has made a huge reduction in the use and disposal of lubricating and hydraulic oil in our province. This technology is helping the environment. It is also saving my customers a lot of money.

I sing and play guitar for friends and family. I was a Cub/Scout leader for 7 years and a member of the Kiwanis club. As I am self-employed, I find my free time is limited so I had to discontinue my volunteering. I enjoy most outdoor sports and activities including walking my dog, ice jockey, hiking and mountain bike riding.

Self-employment can be tough, especially if it is a new business. Do your research. Talk to professionals and do not give up when the chips are down.
