Learn About My Career

I run a non-profit program that supports environmental sustainability in the arts.

I was born/grew up in: Barrie, ON

I now live in: Montreal, QC

I completed my training/education at: BSc (Environmental Science), University of Guelph. MSc (Integrated Water Resources Management), McGill University

I coordinate the Creative Green Tools Canada program. I manage staff, write grant applications, and report to funders. I also form partnerships and make sure our tools respond to the needs of the arts and culture sector. My job also requires in-depth knowledge of environmental impacts, greenhouse gas emissions and how to calculate carbon footprints. My STEM background has helped me a lot in my current line of work. It taught me critical thinking, mathematics, and an understanding of many biological and chemical processes.

The team I manage are all very capable people. One of my favourite things is learning from other members of my team. Being able to share ideas brings so much to our work. I often make decisions at work. Whenever possible, I ask for input from my team before doing so. I am always open to changing our approach if it's not working. I am also very fortunate to work in a bilingual environment. I get to speak both English and French.

When I was in high school, I definitely didn't think I would be working in the arts! First, I wanted to be a doctor. When I realized that I found blood and needles to be icky I switched my major to environmental sciences. Towards the end of my Bachelor's degree, I became very interested in water. As a result, I did a Master's degree in Integrated Water Resources Management. I worked in the water and sustainability sectors for a few years. I even did an internship at the International Water Association in the Netherlands! Then, I decided I wanted to combine my passion for art and theatre with my background in environmental sciences. That's how I found my current line of work.

Our program is centred around data: how it can be collected for good and used to tell stories. I love the fact that the data we collect through our platform can be used to help artists and arts organizations reduce their environmental impacts. It can also be used to create programs and services that target the demonstrated needs of the arts and culture sector. For me, this job is the perfect combination of logic and creativity!

I love my job because it combines two things I care most about: art and caring for the planet. I believe that artists and creators have a unique ability to use their platforms to make positive change. I think it is very important to engage the arts and culture sector in climate action.

I love going to see theatre shows (and sometimes performing!). I also volunteer with a local community theatre and festival. I also do a lot of yoga and meditation and give my dog all the belly rubs.

Collaborate with others! There are so many people doing interesting things. When you combine forces you can create great things and avoid doing work that's already being done.
