Learners will use their knowledge of AI to ponder and form questions about the future of AI in the workplace and what role citizens could play in its development for daily use.

Safety Notes

Ensure you are familiar with Let's Talk Science's precautions with respect to safe delivery of outreach to youth.

What To Do

  1. Show learners the That's a Real Job! AI Ethical Counsellor video from Let's Talk Science to get them thinking. (~1minute)
  2. Using the Q-chart template, ask learners to use their knowledge of AI to form questions about the future development of AI and what impacts this technology may have on their future career paths.
  3. Once learners have completed their charts, ask the educator to form small groups of learners (four learners) to discuss and compare questions.
  4. As a whole group facilitate a discussion on the most common questions

The goal of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is to be equal to human intelligence. Many robotic engineers have managed to create human-like robots, but the robots don’t yet have intelligence equal to humans. AI is a way to combine the strengths of computers and humans. A computer's strength is its ability to process a ton of data in a short time period—its computing speed is untouchable! Humans will never be able to do calculations as fast as computers, however, human strengths include creativity and critical thinking, as humans can look at a problem from different points of view.

AI is already changing the job market. Robots controlled by AI are doing many things that humans used to do and people are beginning to worry that they will be replaced by machines. During the industrial revolution, people worried about the same thing. Some experts predict that AI will make some jobs obsolete, but it will also create more jobs. Some of them call this the fourth industrial revolution. This change will mainly affect jobs that involve manual labour, but it will also affect office jobs where people make routine decisions, as we can automate these tasks with AI systems. AI is a great tool, and it can help us find solutions to many problems, in any area where we use data, which is almost everywhere! This said, the information these programs learn from must be fair and unbiased to make the best decisions.

As technology advances, it is more important than ever that people contribute to the digital world. We may not know exactly what the future holds, but we can be pretty sure that AI will play an important role and many scientists in Canada are working hard to figure out how humans and machines can build a better world together. Understanding how AI learns and impacts human beings, better equips learners for the future.

What's Happening?

Why Does It Matter?

As technology advances, it is more important than ever that people contribute to the digital world. We may not know exactly what the future holds, but we can be pretty sure that AI will play an important role and many scientists in Canada are working hard to figure out how humans and machines can build a better world together.
