What's in a Face?
Learners will use their knowledge of AI and how facial filters work to explore the pros and cons of this rapidly advancing technology.
What You Need
- Writing tool (ex. pen or pencil)
- Copy of the pros and cons organizer template (digital version for those with computer access)
- Video: "How Snapchat's filters work"
Guide:
Safety Notes
Ensure you are familiar with Let's Talk Science's precautions with respect to safe delivery of outreach to youth.
What To Do
- Show learners the video "How Snapchat's filters work" (~5 minutes).
- Using the pros and cons organizer template, ask learners to use their knowledge of AI and facial filters to draft a list of pros and cons of using this technology.
- Once learners have completed their list of pros and cons, ask the educator to form small groups of learners (four learners) to discuss and compare lists.
- As a full group, facilitate a discussion on the most common pros and cons.
Discovery
The rise of deep learning within computer programs has contributed to accelerating facial recognition development and humans are no longer required to confirm every data or image submission. Computers are given thousands of pictures, of different humans, showing different emotions, to allow artificial intelligence programs to learn and recognize human emotion. But what happens when a human is no longer confirming every choice a computer makes? What are some issues that can arise when using this type of technology?
As technology advances, it is more important than ever that people contribute to the digital world. Understanding how AI learns and helps human beings, better equips learners for the future.
